Being a writer is not easy, especially if you don't have a degree related to it. It takes a lot to learn new things and master them. But with determination, hard work, and perseverance, everything is possible.

I started writing my very first article in high school. I then wrote some short stories around that time. But I have lost interest because I have to deal with life.

It's been a long time since I started reviving my passion for writing. But when I did, I sucked on it! That's what happens if you neglect talent for more than two decades!

However, even if you finally started writing, earning from it is a different thing. But I'm determined to have my writing business so that I don't have to work in an office setting ever again.

How to Start a Writing Business

You don't need a degree to be a writer these days. Although it will help a lot of you to have one. Creating content is not easy but with the right skills and motivation, it's possible. If you like writing short stories, you try PENPEE for free. Below are the things you have to do to start your writing business.

1. Start Reading

Yes, you read it right! If you want to start a writing business, it's best to read about it first. You need to have as much knowledge as you can before becoming a freelance or full-time writer.

Practice your research skills by finding the knowledge that you need to learn as a writer. Make use of search engines. Google was not created just for fun. It can help you a lot in finding valuable information.

2. Keep a Journal

As a writer, keeping a journal will be helpful. I started writing again and practiced with my journal. It helps a lot since it can be used to create your writing goals. Write about how you can make it happen. Start a writing schedule too.

Many writers keep a journal also to take note of their struggles and small wins. It will serve as your map for your writing journey. It doesn't have to be the classic pen and paper. You can use your phone to have a digital version. But I prefer both.

3. Look for Clients

If you think you're ready to start writing as a business, it's time to look for clients. There are a lot of writing gigs around the internet. Just use your research skills to find them and start applying for the job.

However, it may take some time to land a serious client to hire you. I don't have luck with the job boards, though. So, I have to find something that will get me started. I was able to find some clients. There are clients everywhere who need your help.

4. Create a Blog

If you still can't get a writing gig, that means that you have to start your blog. It will serve as your writing portfolio to give the clients your blog link for writing samples. It can also protect your work since it already exists online.

Creating a blog is simple. All you have to do is to use WordPress or Blogger to create a free blog. If you want to monetize it for later, you can get a hosting web service. Hostinger, Go Daddy, NameCheap, and other web hosting sites can help you with that.

5. Don't Stop Writing

As a writer, that means that you have to keep on writing. It doesn't mean that you have to keep on working. You have to write for your journal or your blog to practice and hone your writing style.

If you're a content writer like me, you can complete your daily task and relax. But after that, I started writing again for my novel. Yes, you can also become a fiction writer if you like writing stories and turning them into a book. It will provide you with a passive income from royalties.

Final Thoughts

Starting a writing business is not as hard as it sounds. All you need is to have a lot of patience and perseverance to keep it ongoing. Hard work does pay for real. Based on experience, my writing business is getting better as time goes by. You can do it too if you just go for it.
